GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE March 2014 Dear Brothers/Friends: The Pond Hockey team, together with the team’s family, friends and supporters, enjoyed the Lake Winnipesaukee Tournament. If there is not a picture inside this bulletin, then next month we hope to have a picture of the team proudly displaying the Council logo on their jersey’s. In all likelihood by the time this bulletin is out, Danny Gill and the Old Brigade will have performed and put smile on the faces of all present. He may have sold some of his seemingly endless supply of “limited edition” Old Brigade merchandise. Thank-you to Jim Wells, PGK/Treasurer; George Kenney, PGK and new volunteers, Ted Griffin and Jim Kelley, for purchasing, preparing and serving the traditional grey corned beef sandwiches. The Communion Breakfast is Sunday April 6, 2014. Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 am at St. Camillus by Father O’Leary, our Chaplin. We hope that all will make an effort to attend Mass and the breakfast. There will be a speaker at the breakfast. Long-time member, Tom Yewcic is helping us line some-one up. Tickets will be on sale soon. More details next month. We extended an invitation to our former Chaplin, Father DiPeri. He sends his best wishes to all but he is not able to attend due to his obligations as Pastor at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted in nearby Waltham. As some may already know, Father DiPeri and his parishioners formed a K of C council in that nearby parish. Due to Easter, this year the Patriots Day Parade is actually on the Monday of the holiday, April 20, 2014. The tireless, dedicated and actively involved Mike Daniell, PGK is once again organizing our participation in the parade, and the festivities at the Council after the parade. Please consider volunteering to help Mike. The popular Cinco de Mayo event is back! This year the event is Tres de Mayo, or Saturday, May 3, 2014 for those who do not speak Spanish. There will be a Mexican theme, with the Dave Sammarco band and Tex-Mex food. More details to follow next month. Some of the new members who recently joined the Council are planning to run a fundraiser in the fall. This is great news since if the Council is to “live long and thrive”, we need new folks to get involved at all levels and at all of our events. A new event organized by new members will be a breath of fresh air. If you have not yet had a chance to pay your dues, please do so at your early convenience. We thank all of the members for their continued support. God Bless Council 109 GK Mike Keefe To keep informed of Council activities, visit our website at www.kofc109.comMOTIONS The following Notice(s) of Motion are pending:Move that the Council donate $500 to the Chris Crouteau Fund, to be used to defray the cost of a handicapped accessible van. THE WINNIPESAUKEE POND HOCKEY TOURNAMENT Below is a picture of the team at the tournament. Talk about a recruiting tool! Who does not want to join a Council with hockey players who proudly wear the logo!
ODDS AND ENDS Do you know that we have a Credit Union? The Credit Union is federally chartered and insured. It has been serving the needs of the members for over 30 years. Please see the Manager, Fred Greener if you are interested in joining the Credit Union or if you need a loan. Sadly Dave Carr, PGK recently passed away. The Council sent its condolences to the family. Longtime members, Joseph Mazzotta and George Smith also died recently. We thank Father Carmichael for offering mass for our deceased members. Also, it was sad to learn that legendary coach, Ed Burns passed. Coach Burns was a teacher coach and role model, who touched the lives of many members in many ways. May they all rest in peace. Longtime member, Harry McCabe is a Massachusetts General Hospital. Harry is doing well. A visit or a card would be appreciated. We are looking into updating the website. Ideally, we will add the capability to post the bulletin as a PDF. April 21 brings Patriots Day and the annual State council Lantern Award Dinner. This year the recipient is Dr. David King, an MGH surgeon. Dr. King is a Lieutenant Colonel in Army Reserve. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan as an Army surgeon. After completing the Boston Marathon, Dr. King went to the hospital and operated for 30 hours on victims of the bombing. We are honored to be recognizing this hero! Thank you to all who currently serve or have served in the armed forces. Please pray throughout the year for the sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen, Marines and all who serve in the military. Their sacrifice protects our liberty.
BULLETIN UPDATE Thank you to all who have joined the list for the electronic bulletin. Please consider joining the email list so that you can receive bulletin electronically. By joining the list, you will get the bulletin earlier and you will be saving money for the Council—money which can be used for charitable activities. If you are interested in adding your name to the electronic bulletin list, please email Mike Keefe (mikejk33@comcast.net).
